Yi Dynasty Tiger

A pair of Yi Dynasty Tiger and Dragon. Circa 1900. The tiger has been strongly associated with Korean culture as a guardian that drives away evil spirit and a sacred creature that brings good luck. Koreans believed that magpies delivered good news and invited good people. The most famous painting related to a magpie is the one with striped tiger (ggach’i wha horangi minhwa): the magpie is happily chirping to a tiger. The magpie represented good news and the tiger symbolized good luck, since its pronunciation in Chinese sounds similar to good luck (bok). The painting is named Jakhodo – “jak” for magpie and “ho” for tiger. The painting also includes a symbolic ox (hidden face in tree) which is a respected animal in Korean folklore. Dragons are legendary in Korean mythology as is the case in China. In Korea, they are primarily benevolent beings related to water and agriculture often considered bringers of rain and clouds. This dragon is depicted is chasing the mythical Cintamani which only a four-toe dragon is wise and powerful enough to hold. A fine pair of paintings framed in gold with non-reflective glass. Size Frame 76 x 61 cm, Picture 51 x 43 cm. SOLD AS A PAIR

Ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kunisada

Utagawa Kunisada II (1823–1880) was a Japanese Ukiyo-e printmaker, one of three to take the name “Utagawa Kunisada.” A pupil of Utagawa Kunisada I, he signed much of his early work “Baidō Kunimasa III.” He took the name Kunisada after marrying his master’s eldest daughter in 1846. He changed his name once more following his master’s death, to Toyokuni III. However, since there were three artists called Toyokuni before him, Kunisada II is now often known as Toyokuni IV. Kunisada II is renowned for his prints. His favourite subjects were pleasure-houses and tea ceremonies. These themes are sometimes found together in some of his prints, as geishas usually acted as chaperones at tea-houses.

J.M.W. Turner Engraving Holz Island, Northumberland

Holy Island, Northumberland, engraved by W. Tombleson. From Picturesque Views in England and Wales. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 – 1851) is probably the most celebrated English artist of all time. Both eccentric and prolific, the many J. M. W. Turner paintings and watercolors show a genius that was recognized even during his own lifetime. In his early career his style was Romantic, but he was highly experimental and later Turner paintings would be revolutionary in style.
